In Austria's dense city traffic, every minute – and every meter – counts. An e-scooter with 25 km/h gets you to your destination quickly, emission-free, and without the hassle of looking for a parking spot. These models are precisely tailored to Austrian regulations: compliant with the Road Traffic Act (StVO), usable without a driver's license, and ideal for your daily commute to work, university, or as the "last mile" to buses and trains. At Fadu Bike, you will find a vetted selection of e-scooters – also available with a seat for extra comfort upon request.

Why an e-scooter with 25 km/h is the right choice

The 25 km/h limit is not a disadvantage, but rather the legal sweet spot for the city: fast enough to keep up with traffic and safe enough to ride on bike paths. An e-scooter 25 km/h is impressive because of:

  • No bureaucracy: no driver's license, no registration, and no mandatory insurance for standard models.
  • Low costs: minimal maintenance, affordable battery charging instead of fuel bills.
  • Flexibility: foldable, easy to store, and can be taken on public transport.
  • Sustainability: emission-free and quiet – good for the city and your budget.

E-scooters 25 km/h in Austria: the new rules since May 2026

With the 36th amendment to the Road Traffic Act (StVO), e-scooters in Austria have been legally classified as vehicles since May 1, 2026. Anyone riding an e-scooter in Austria at 25 km/h should know the current requirements. Here is an overview of the most important points:

Do I need a driver's license or insurance?

No. For a standard e-scooter with a design-related maximum speed of 25 km/h and a maximum of 600 watts, no driver's license and no insurance are required in Austria. If you ride regularly, you can choose to have your private liability or accident insurance check your coverage – but it is not mandatory.

Helmet, blood alcohol limit, and minimum age

Since May 2026, the following applies: riders under 16 years of age must wear a helmet (it remains recommended for older riders). There is a blood alcohol limit of 0.5 per mille. The minimum age is – as with bicycles – 12 years; younger children are permitted to ride with a cycling license (from the 4th grade of primary school onwards) or when accompanied by a person at least 16 years old.

Mandatory equipment

Approved models must be equipped with: turn signals on the handlebar ends, bell or horn, front and rear lights, reflectors (white at the front, red at the rear, yellow on the sides), and an effective brake. Older scooters without turn signals and bells must be retrofitted – you can find the appropriate parts in our e-scooter spare parts category. Only one person is allowed to ride at a time – carrying passengers and transporting goods are not permitted.

Where can I ride?

E-scooters may continue to use bike paths and cycling infrastructure – the same traffic rules apply as for cyclists. Riding on sidewalks and footpaths is prohibited. This makes the e-scooter 25 km/h the straightforward solution for daily urban life in Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg, and beyond.

Status: July 2026. This information is intended for guidance and does not replace legal advice – the applicable legal provisions are authoritative.

Which models are compliant with Austrian traffic regulations (StVO)?

Not every e-scooter automatically meets legal requirements. The key is the combination of maximum speed (max. 25 km/h), motor power (max. 600 watts), and the mandatory equipment including turn signals and a bell. All models offered at Fadu Bike meet the requirements of the StVO for e-scooters in Austria and are tailored for urban use – in quality, craftsmanship, and ease of handling.

E-scooters with a seat – more comfort for longer distances

Those who travel longer distances daily will benefit from an e-scooter with a seat and 25 km/h. The seat relieves strain on the legs and back, ensures a stable riding position, and provides more control – especially when frequently stopping in city traffic. This way, you combine the legally permitted speed with ergonomic comfort for your daily commute.
