On an e-scooter, a helmet is not a question of style. The small wheels react much more sensitively to tram tracks, curbs, and potholes than a bicycle, and a fall usually results in going over the handlebars. In this category, you will find 12 e-scooter helmets ranging from around € 30 to € 110: skater helmets with hard shells, lightweight in-mold models, children's helmets, and a helmet with integrated turn signals.

Which helmet is permitted for your e-scooter?

The answer depends solely on the design speed of your vehicle. Confusing the two is the most common mistake when buying in this category.

  • E-scooters up to 25 km/h: equated with bicycles in Austria. The appropriate standard is EN 1078, i.e., a certified bicycle helmet. Helmets are mandatory for children under 12 years of age; for adults, wearing one is voluntary.
  • E-mopeds up to 45 km/h: a helmet is mandatory here without exception, and it must be a helmet compliant with ECE 22.06. A bicycle helmet does not meet this legal requirement, regardless of how sturdy it may seem.

If you ride a faster vehicle, you can find the permitted models under moped helmets compliant with ECE 22.06. Corresponding vehicles can be found under e-mopeds with 45 km/h.

Hard shell or in-mold: the difference in everyday life

Both construction types meet the same standard. They differ in what they can withstand during city use and how comfortable they are to wear.

  • Hard shell or skater helmet: thick outer shell, lower-reaching back of the head area. Robust against what a commuter helmet experiences daily: backpacks, handlebar hooks, concrete floors.
  • In-mold helmet: outer and inner shells are fused together. This makes them lighter and equipped with larger ventilation openings, but more sensitive to pressure marks and scratches.

The trade-off: robustness and coverage of the back of the head versus weight and ventilation. For short city trips and daily transport, a skater helmet is the more pragmatic choice; for long distances in the summer, the in-mold helmet. Which construction type fits your riding profile also depends on your vehicle: e-scooters up to 25 km/h at a glance.

Visibility: why a helmet with turn signals makes sense on a scooter

On an e-scooter, both hands stay on the handlebars. Using hand signals when turning compromises stability, and right where one turns, there are often tram tracks and cobblestones in Vienna.

A helmet with integrated turn signals and an LED rear light places the signal at head level, i.e., in the field of vision of following vehicles. In our assortment: the CP02 helmet with integrated turn signals for € 74.50. Important to know: it does not replace the mandatory vehicle lighting. You can find matching lights and locks under e-scooter accessories.

Check size and fit correctly

Measure your head circumference with a tape measure about two centimeters above your eyebrows. Adult sizes are usually between 52 and 63 cm. In this category, we mainly stock sizes M and L.

  • Chin strap: a maximum of two fingers between the strap and your chin.
  • Fit check: With the strap fastened, the helmet must not be able to be pushed back off your forehead.
  • Children: two children's models in our range, starting at € 39.95. Please note the EN 1080 standard with a safety buckle.

Frequently asked questions about e-scooter helmets

Is there a mandatory helmet law for e-scooters in Austria?

Yes, for children under 12 years old, because e-scooters are legally treated like bicycles. Adults decide for themselves. Nevertheless, the accident mechanics clearly speak in favor of a helmet: small wheels, hard ground, falling forward.

Can I wear my bicycle helmet on the e-scooter?

Yes. A helmet compliant with EN 1078 is the correct standard for e-scooters up to 25 km/h. A model with a lower-reaching back of the head area makes sense because scooter falls are more likely to involve the back of the head than classic cycling falls.

Is an e-scooter helmet sufficient for an e-moped at 45 km/h?

No. For vehicles up to 45 km/h, a helmet compliant with ECE 22.06 is legally required. A bicycle helmet is neither permitted there nor designed for these impact speeds.

What size do I need if I am between M and L?

Choose the smaller size, provided the adjustment dial still has room for expansion. A helmet that can be tightened sits more securely than one that is already at its limit. When in doubt, try both sizes at our store in Vienna.

When must I replace a helmet?

Immediately after any fall involving an impact, even without visible damage. For e-scooter helmets, there is a second reason: they are often transported in backpacks or squeezed against the handlebars. Constant pressure on the EPS inner shell reduces the protective effect just as much as a fall.

Can I try on the helmet before buying?

Yes. Order online and pick up for free in Vienna, or come directly to Weyringergasse 37, 1040 Vienna. If the size is wrong, our 30-day return policy applies.
