Regular e-bike maintenance significantly extends the service life of the motor, battery, and wear parts. A well-maintained e-bike guarantees maximum safety, longer range, and saves you from expensive repairs in the long run.

Why regular e-bike care is crucial

Continuous e-bike inspection prevents premature wear and system failures. E-bikes are subject to extreme stresses due to motor assistance and their heavier weight. A failing drive or fading brakes are safety risks—especially in dense Viennese city traffic or on challenging routes in the Vienna Woods.

The 5-minute checklist after every ride

The 5-minute checklist after every ride

A quick check-up after your ride identifies potential defects before they escalate into costly damage.

  • Visual inspection: Check the frame, fork, and tires for cracks, dents, or embedded foreign objects (such as glass shards from the Danube Canal).

  • Rough cleaning: Remove heavy dirt and mud immediately from the drivetrain to prevent corrosion and blocked jockey wheels.

  • Battery management: Check the charge level. For optimal e-bike battery life, ideally keep the capacity between 20% and 80%.

Monthly e-bike maintenance: What you can do yourself

With basic tools, you can perform essential maintenance on your e-bike yourself. These four steps should be part of your monthly routine:

Monthly e-bike maintenance: What you can do yourself

1. Properly caring for and charging the e-bike battery

A correctly charged and stored battery retains its capacity much longer. Protect the cells from temperature extremes.

  • Temperature: Store the battery at room temperature (ideal: 10–20 °C).

  • Acclimatization: Never charge the battery immediately after a winter ride in sub-zero temperatures. Let it warm up to room temperature first.

  • Charging cycle: Avoid deep discharges. Connect the charger when the capacity drops to approx. 20%.

2. Drivetrain: Cleaning and oiling the chain

To maintain your e-bike chain, you need clean rags and special e-bike chain oil. A well-maintained chain minimizes cassette wear and ensures precise gear shifting.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the chain with a dry rag. Avoid aggressive degreasers that wash the lubricant out of the chain links.

  • Oiling: Apply e-bike-specific chain oil (designed for higher torque) sparingly to the inside of the chain while rotating the crank backward.

  • Wiping: Wait 5 minutes and wipe off excess oil. An oil film only attracts unnecessary dust and dirt.

3. Checking tire pressure and tread

The correct e-bike tire pressure is essential for puncture protection, grip, and maximizing your battery's range.

  • Check pressure: Check the tire pressure monthly with a floor pump with a pressure gauge. You can find the bar specifications on the tire sidewall. Due to the weight, e-bikes usually require slightly higher pressure.

  • Check wear: Examine the tread for cracks or wear. A worn-down tread means an acute risk of slipping, especially on wet tram tracks in Vienna.

4. Checking brakes for function and wear

To adjust e-bike brakes or check for wear, a close look at the levers and pads is necessary. Intact brakes are your life insurance.

  • Lever travel: The pressure point must be clearly defined. If the brake lever can be pulled all the way to the handlebar grip, the system must be bled.

  • Pad thickness: On disc brakes, check the gap between the backing plate and the brake disc. The pad thickness (the friction material) must be at least 1 mm.

  • Noises: A metallic scraping sound signals completely worn-out pads – immediate replacement required!

E-bike cleaning: Do's and Don'ts

E-bike cleaning: Do's and Don'ts

Proper washing protects the electronics and prevents rust, especially after exposure to road salt during Viennese winters.

Do's:

  • Use special bicycle cleaners, plenty of water, and soft brushes.

  • Remove the battery and display (if possible). Cover the electrical contacts (e.g., with neoprene covers).

  • Dry the e-bike thoroughly after washing.

Don'ts:

  • Never use a high-pressure cleaner! The water jet forces water and dirt directly into the sealed motor bearings, hubs, and electronics.

  • Avoid harsh household cleaners that make paint, rubber seals, and plastics porous.

When is professional e-bike service in a workshop necessary?

Despite regular self-maintenance, the complex technology of an e-bike requires professional inspections. A professional e-bike service is essential at least once a year (before the start of the season).

E-bike service

You must visit a workshop if you experience:

  • Pending software updates (motor management & battery diagnostics).

  • Unusual motor noises, vibrations, or error codes on the display.

  • Hydraulic brakes that need bleeding (spongy pressure point).

  • Worn drivetrain components (cassette, chainring) that require special puller tools.

  • Bent wheels or wobbling (truing required).
